HYDERABAD: When his repeated SMSes failed to evoke a response, this ‘lover boy’ flew into Hyderabad from Kerala with a ‘proposal’ for the family members of the girl he wished to marry. He must have been aware that he was asking for trouble, but that did not deter this 28-year-old from making an attempt.
The Banjara Hills police arrested a BTech dropout from Malappuram, Ashraf, who confidently walked into the Banjara Hills (Road No 9) residence of tennis star Sania Mirza with a marriage proposal, just two days ahead of the muchhyped engagement of the tennis star to Mohammed Sohrab Mirza.
It was around 10.30 pm when Ashraf, accompanied by his friend D Mohanty, arrived at Sania’s house. A few steps into the house and he was stopped by the policemen posted there. “I want to marry Sania Mirza and want to talk to her,’’ declared Ashraf and the next moment he and his friend were taken into custody. Later, at around 11.15 pm Sania’s father Imran Mirza and Sohrab went to the Banjara Hills police station and lodged a formal complaint. A police picket had been posted at Sania’s residence for the last couple of days after SMSes were sent to her mobile phone, which is normally carried by her father.
The SMSes read, “I desire to marry Sania.’’ This was followed by threatening messages like “Sania will face the consequences if she is not married to me….’’ “It was Ashraf who was sending these messages and he has confessed,’’ Banjara Hills Inspector Mohammed Iqbal Siddiqui said. Ashraf boarded a flight in Kochi arrived in the city on Tuesday. He asked his friend (Mohanty), who lives in Bangalore, to join him in Hyderabad for a holiday.
“Ashraf initially sent messages with a request to marry Sania. When there was no response, he started sending threatening messages,’’ Siddiqui said.
During questioning Ashraf told the police that he saw Sania at the Sunfeast open in Bangalore two years ago.
“Immediately, I felt that she would be the perfect life partner and I decided to marry her,” Siddiqui quoted Ashraf as saying. Ashraf is presently pursuing AMIE, a correspondence degree in engineering. What remains a mystery is how he got Sania’s telephone number. Imran is known to change his daughter’s number every month.
An unrepentant Ashraf surprised the police when he asserted that he had the right to propose to any girl he wanted. Cases were registered against him under sections 452 IPC (house trespass), 506 IPC (criminal intimidation) and 509 IPC (word or gesture intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
